Sweden wanted Russia expelled from the Council of Europe after the Russian-Georgian War in the summer of 2008, according to a classified document published by the notorious WikiLeaks site.

The information was reported Wednesday by the Bulgarian news agency BTA, citing France Press, which has obtained a copy of the document, prepared by the US Embassy in Stockholm on the information of an unnamed Swedish diplomat.

The document informs Sweden as the President of the Council of Europe was going to seek support from other members of the Council in an attempt to expel Russia through a vote. The idea belonged to Swedish Foreign Minister, Carl Bildt.

The Bulgarian trace stems from the fact Bulgaria, along with Belgium, the UK, Denmark, the Baltic Republics, Slovenia and Slovakia, had been in favor of a hard-line position of the Council of Europe and a strong reaction of the European Union against Russia.

On the other side were France, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus, saying the most important issue was the ceasefire between Russia and Georgia.
