The project to build a second Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Bulgaria's Danube town of Belene does not have a life on its own, the right-wing leader Ivan Kostov declared

According to the Chair of the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party and "Blue Coalition" co-Chair, there are no perspectives for mass and long-term sales of the nuclear energy Belene will produce while the burden will lay entirely within the National Electric Company (NEK)

Kostov spoke for reporters Tuesday all while the "Energy without Frontiers" conference was held in Sofia in the presence of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, the Minister of Economy and Energy, Traicho Traikov, and CEO of the Russian Rosatom, Sergey Kiriyenko.

During the conference, Traikov announced Finnish state-owned Fortum and French consulting firm Altran Technologies are the two companies willing to participate in the NNP project while Serbia reconfirmed interest in a stake in the 2 000 megawatt plant

Despite these stated intentions, Kostov pointed out Belene would become a true business project only if NEK commits to cover all possible losses, which is a strong sign the entire idea was "unstable."

"Now, there is some willingness from the Russian side for compromise such as storing the nuclear fuel for 60 years and it all shows Russia knows their initial proposal was flawed," the right-wing leader said..
