US President Obama got an injury during a basketball game with friends and family that left him with 12 stitches in his lower lip.

Obama and some friends and family of his played a full-court basketball game on Friday at Fort McNair, which is when he was hit with an elbow in his lower lip and then had to visit the White House Medical Unit, the White House press service explained.

"After being inadvertently hit with an opposing player's elbow in the lip while playing basketball with friends and family, the President received 12 stitches today administered by the White House Medical Unit," said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs in a statement.

The medical staff that treated Obama used a finer filament than usual, allowing for more numerous and tighter stitches and, as a result, a smaller scar. Obama received a local anesthetic while he was being stitched up, reported the Washington Post.

The player who unwillingly elbowed the American President was later identified by media reports as Rey Decerega of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute.

The White House released a statement from Decerega, who says he enjoys playing basketball with Obama and is sure the president will be back out on the court again soon.

Obama plays basketball regularly, and has revealed that becoming a professional basketball player was once a dream of his.
