Bulgaria: War on Wheels Wiped Out Entire Bulgarian Town Last 20 Years Traffic accidents have claimed the lives of more than 20 000 Bulgarians last 20 years. File photo

A total of 21 773 Bulgarians have lost their lives in traffic accidents during the last 20 years, the statistics show on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

This number equals the population of a medium-sized town by Bulgarian standards.

Some 25% of the victims have died younger than the age of 24.

Bulgaria leads EU in traffic deaths, reaching as high as 150 deaths per million people.

Additionaly, as many as 168 007 Bulgarians have remained handicapped for the rest of ther lives during the last 20 years.

Around the world, approximately 1.3 million people die each year on the roads. These alarming figures are hopefully going to change in the 2010-2020 Decade of Action for Road Safety, declared by the UN.
