Bulgaria: Proposal for Bulgarian Referendum on Turkey EU Accession Successful - Report

The 200,000 signatures required by Bulgarian legislation for Parliament to consider a referendum have been gathered for a vote on Turkish EU accession, according to nationalist VMRO party vice-chair Angel Dzhambazki.

At least 200,000 of the 330,000 signatures gathered by VMRO have been checked and certified by the directorate on Civic Registration as authentic, according to Dzhambazki.

This means that the proposal for a referendum will have to be forwarded by the parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs to be voted in plenary.

According to Bulgarian legislation, the national citizens' initiative for referendum is kicked off if at least 200,000 signatures have been gathered and Parliament approves the holding of a popular vote.

If Dzhambazki's information proves to be correct, this will be the first time Parliament will have to consider holding a national referendum under the new Law on Citizens' Participation.
