Bulgaria's Transport Minister, Alexander Tsvetkov, has defined as "absolutely real" China's invitation to Bulgaria and Turkey to participate in a project for a high-speed railway connection from the Far East to Europe.
"The invitation is absolutely real. It is an old idea of China to have a high-speed railway connection from them, through Turkey and Bulgaria, which would enable the import of more goods to Europe," Tsvetkov said in an interview for the Bulgarian National Television.
He added that Bulgaria was not only ready to realize this project, but was also seeking cooperation with China for renovation of the railway's technology.
"We believe we could cooperate very well with China on this matter. I had many meetings with different companies in China, not only in the field of railways, but also in construction. China is very interested in economic cooperation with Bulgaria," Tsvetkov said.
In his words, however, there have to be changes in the railway's infrastructure and staff because the employees had to be more responsible.
Tsvetkov also said Bulgaria could not provide enough financing for the rehabilitation and modernization of the railways. He said that some of the EU funds for railway infrastructure will go for the construction of the Sofia subway because it was a priority project.
The minister has stated that a big Chinese delegation is preparing to visit Bulgaria until the end of the year and added that business in Bulgaria is not very popular in China.
