Millions of people have lined up to cast their vote in Brazil's heated presidential runoff between Bulgaria-descended Dilma Rousseff and her rival Jose Serra, CNN informs.

According to officials from the country's supreme electoral tribunal (TSE), 135 millions voters are expected to cast their vote and elect their new head of state.

According to the latest survey, Rousseff, who has been put forth by the outgoing Brazilian President Ignacio Lula da Silva, was supported by 48-52% of the voters, while her rival, Serra, has 38-40%.

In the first round of the elections on October 3, Rousseff gained some 47% of the votes, while Serra got 32,6%.

TSE officials have announced that Brazil's large overseas communities had also cast their votes. So far, the voting sections have closed in 16 cities in 27 nations. Voters abroad make up about 0,15% of the electorate, which is about 200,000 people.

The polls will close at 5 pm. And the results will be announced around 7 pm Brazilian central time.

CNN reports that in 60 Brazilian cities, voters use their thumbs instead of ballots. With this newly launched biometric system, voters scan their fingers to log in and cast their vote.

Earlier on Sunday, Dilma cast her vote in her hometown of Belo Horizonte and paid tribute to President Lula.

If she wins the runoff, Rousseff will become the first female president of Brazil.
