Bulgaria's Culture Ministry will receive additional BGN 10 M state funding, Bulgaria's PM Boyko Borisov promised actors backstage after their performance on Sunday in the National Theater.
"It is true. Last week the Prime Minister promised me BGN 10 M more for culture," Bulgaria's Culture Minister Vezhdi Rashidov said.
Borisov has decided to tell the good news to the actors himself, meeting them backstage after one of their most successful plays, "Hashove" (roughly translated as "exiles").
"Do you mean BGN 10 M per person?," asked popular Bulgarian actor Dimitar Rachkov, who is Borisov's friend.
Rachkov was supposed to participate in a play in another Bulgarian city, but left for Sofia immediately and managed to enter the performance halfway after he received a call from the Hashove director Alexander Morfov, who told him about the high-ranking audience.
"The Prime Minister Borisov said he was very pleased with our performance and he would give more money for culture. We will invite him again next week and we will receive BGN 10 M more. And then invite him again and get BGN 30," Rachkov jokingly said.
Actor Hristo Mutafchiev has expressed his hope that "Hashove" had made the Prime Minister decide to give additional state funding for culture.
"Borisov saw how much effort a performance in the National Theater takes. Morfov invited on the stage all the people who worked on the play front and backstage. In the end, it is good when artists's efforts are appreciated," he said.
With the newly promised BGN 10 M, the state funding for culture will become BGN 104 M, which would be a little more than this year's budget, which was BGN 102,5 M before the austerity measures were imposed.
