Bulgaria's nationalist party VMRO has reacted strongly to a public suggestion that the country should introduce mother tongue instructions in kindergarten.
The suggestion was made by Ibrahim Yalamov several days ago. Yalamov, who is the president of "the so called" High Islamic Institute in Sofia, argued that mother tongue and religion must be taught in pre-school education in Bulgaria.
"The demands for "mother tongues" and religion in kindergarten are provocations and the latest attempts to divide our society based on various characteristics. As far as we know, Mr. Yalamov is head of an educational institution, and it is not his job to make such demands. We remind that education in Bulgaria is secular and civilian rather than religious or ethnic," the nationalist party VMRO has declared.
It has sought to "remind" as well that there is a need to start the schooling of minority children in Bulgarian as early as possible as their failure to learn the language torpedoes their economic and social integration with the rest of the society.
