Buildings in Bulgaria are fit to withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of up to 7.5 on the Richter scale, according to Regional Development Minister Rosen Plevneliev.
Plevneliev, who is a construction entrepreneur himself and former manager of Lindner Bulgaria, has stated that even though the new construction in the country in the past years was done "in euphoric haste", the structures of the buildings guaranteed that they will stand even in a 9-magnitude quake on the Medvedev scale, or 7.5-magnitude hit on the Richter scale.
His comment came a day after Sofia was hit by a 3.5-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale that caused no major damage.
The Minister told Darik Radio he was concerned for buildings where the owners changed the facades for their own needs.
He did confirm, however, even the robustness of the concrete panel buildings that were built all across Bulgaria during the communist period.
