The development of the border areas between Bulgaria and Macedonia is set to receive EUR 14.3 M, of them EUR 12 M, from the European Commission as support for their development.

The Memorandum for Understanding for the Program for Trans-border Collaboration between Bulgaria and Macedonia was signed Tuesday by Bulgaria's Minister of Regional Development, Rosen Plevneliev, and Musa DzAFERI, Macedonian Minister of Local Self-Government.

The funds aim at the so-called soft measures to assist businesses and NGOs on both sides of the border in the development of the tourist sector, IT, and infrastructure. The maximum size of a single project is BGN 300 000.

The first public tender has already been launched and there are currently 93 bids. Plevneliev said the goal is to select the winners by the end of the year and start the realization of those projects in the beginning of 2011. The EC is expected to grant a positive assessment for compliance with its program also by the end of 2010.

The second round of public tenders will be announced in the beginning of 2011.

Those, eligible to apply include local authorities, NGOs, schools, colleges and universities from the Bulgarian Regions of Kyustendil and Blagoevgrad and the Northeast, East and Southeast Regions in Macedonia.
