Two Romanian state secretaries will go to Paris in order to discuss with the French authorities the deportation of Roma citizens, the French Immigration Ministry has announced.

The deportation is part of the largest expulsion seen in France since President Nicolas Sarkozy called for tougher action against Roma living in the country illegally.

French officials claim the people, the majority of whom are Bulgarian and Romanian nationals, are leaving the country by mutual agreement and for a compensation (EUR 300 per adult, EUR 100 per child), and also retain the right to return whenever they might wish.

On August 25-26, the Romanian state secretary for integration of Roma, Valentin Mocanu, and the state secretary for order and public safety, Dan Valentin Fotuloiu, will arrive in Paris.

The delegation will be welcomed by the French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux, the Immigration Minister Eric Besson and the secretary of state Pierre Lellouche.

The meetings will be held at Chateau Beauvais on Wednesday and at Quai d'Orsay on Thursday.

“I will ask them for assistance for the integration of the Roma community in their country. France is making efforts. It is natural for the Romanian authorities to join these effort too,” said Hortefeaux on Monday on the French Radio Europe 1.

The Immigration Minister Besson has also stated that he expects more efforts on the Romanian side.

“We could expect better cooperation for the reintegration of their own citizens, because they are their citizens,” he said on Radio France Internationale.

According to data from the French Integration Ministry, 216 Roma were repatriated last week. The number is expected to reach 800-850 people by the end of August.

The first group of migrants, deported from France to Bulgaria late on Friday, consisted of ethnic Turks, not Roma, as initially expected, according to local media reports.

France expelled thirteen Bulgaria nationals, living illegally on its territory, saying they have overstayed their three-month limit.
