A former world-class gymnast and coach is facing charges he raped a teenage girl 10 years ago after authorities located him through Facebook.
Bulgarian native Kaloyan Gerogiev Kaloyanov is accused of raping a teenage girl in 2000 while working as a coach in Fremont. The teenage gymnast told police that Kaloyanov attacked her twice.
The girl reported the incidents two years later, after turning 18 and moving to Southern California.
Kaloyanov was questioned in 2002 and claimed the sex was consensual. He then fled the country, leaving behind his wife and daughter, and evaded police for eight years.
Authorities looking into the cold case found out through Facebook that he was working on a cruise ship.
The 36-year-old Kaloyanov is now being held in Alameda County jail.
