Bulgaria: PM Vows to Boost Development of Northern Bulgaria Bulgaria's Hemus Highway should lead from Sofia to Varna, but work on it is frozen at a stage at which it just crosses the Stara Planina range north of Sofia. File photo.

Infrastructure in northern Bulgaria is underdeveloped and that should change, said Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov in Varna.

He vowed that the GERB cabinet led by him will work hard to improve that situation.

Bulgaria’s North, especially the northwest and the extreme northeast has been suffering from underdevelopment, economic slowdown and demographic depletion more than the southern regions of the country.

Speaking on occasion of Varna’s holiday, the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God, Borisov said that his government will launch major projects to eliminate the imbalance between North and South.

Recently, there has been talk about a re-launch of stalled Hemus highway that should lead from Sofia to Varna though Bulgaria’s north.
