About 14 million people, 6 million of which are kids, have been affected directly or indirectly by the floods in Pakistan, which are the worst in nearly a century, UN officials have stated.

The Pakistan Disaster Authority has confirmed the death of 1 313 people. However, officials have said that the number could reach 1500, CNN has reported.

According to official data, 1 588 people have been injured, 352 291 people have been rescued, more than 722 000 houses have been damaged and almost 2 million people have been left without a shelter.

Doctors from the region have stated that the dirty flooding waters, as well as the lack of drinking water and the bad sanitation, have caused infections like stomach problems, chest infections and skin problems. They have also warned about eventual outbreak of various epidemics, the BBC has reported.

The ongoing monsoon rains have flooded whole regions and villages, causing many people to move to safer lands. The flooding has started in the northwest and has threatened places in the south part of the country.

According to the CNN, for many parts of southern Pakistan, the worst is yet to come.

The aid and rescue efforts include the participation of 55 helicopters and 621 boats. However, food and housing shortages are widespread.

“The assistance that we have so far provided has alleviated suffering, but relief operations need to be massively scaled up,” said Martin Mogwanja, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Pakistan, as cited by the CNN.

The UN will launch Wednesday an initial Pakistani emergency response plan with USD 400 M more in aid.

The United States have also provided rescue airlifts and more than 435 000 meals, the CNN reported.
