A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7,5 has shaken the Vanuatu archipelago in the South Pacific, generating a small tsunami.

On Tuesday, the police said there were no major damages or injuries from the earthquake or the tsunami.

The earthquake has hit about 40 km northwest of Port Vila on Vanuatu at a depth of 35 km.

Authorities have warned people to move to higher grounds.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported a wave of 23 cm at Port Vila, as reported by CNN.

“This is only an initial measurement of the first arriving tsunami wave. Higher wave amplitudes may yet to be observed along coasts near the earthquake epicenter,” officials from the center said, as reported by the CNN.

Vanuatu is located in the South Pacific Ocean, about three quarters of the way from Hawaii to Australia, and includes numerous islands.
