Bulgaria’s Minister of Defense, Anyu Angelov, has announced that he will not change his choice for the new director of the country’s military intelligence.
“I do not plan to change my proposal for a candidate for the new director of the military intelligence, which is commodore Valentin Gagashev,” Angelov said Sunday in the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Varna, where he is participating in the Bulgarian navy’s 131st anniversary.
The minister has stated that another candidate was considered in April, but after a closer look at the proposed person’s candidature, he was rejected because he did not know English very well.
“I do not share the President’s view that we need to have continuity,” Angelov said as a comment to the Bulgarian President’s statement on Saturday that “there have been a violation in the procedure and the principle of electing the director of the military intelligence”.
Bulgaria’s President Georgi Parvanov has also stated that solution for this case will be found until the end of August.
The conflict between the country’s head and the Defense Minister erupted when on Thursday President Parvanov came out with a sharp statement denouncing the fact that the Bulgarian cabinet had voted for a candidate proposed by Minister Angelov that was not approved by the President beforehand.
On Wednesday, the Bulgarian cabinet voted Angelov’s choice, commodore Valentin Gagashev to be referred for approval to the President.
Parvanov claimed he became aware of the fact only through information announced by Bulgarian media and was not informed at all, much less consulted.
