A Pakistani MP, his bodyguard and at least 35 more people have been killed in a shooting in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi.

The BBC has reported that more than 100 people have also been wounded. Nearby cars and shops have been set on fire during the police's attempts to get the situation under control.

The Pakistani MP Raza Haider and his bodyguard have been killed at a funeral in a mosque. Haider has been a member of MQM (Muttahida Qaumi Movement), which was the leading party in Karachi and which consisted mostly from immigrants from India.

According to the BBC, MQM officials have claimed that supporters of their rival Awami Nationalist Party (ANP) were responsible for the shooting.

The MQM and ANP are part of Pakistan's governing coalition, which is led by President Asif Ali Zardari's Pakistan People's Party.

Security officials in Karachi have told the BBC there was evidence the shooting was carried out by the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Pakistan's deadliest militant group, which has links to al-Qaeda and many of its leaders are based in Pakistan's tribal region.

The police in Karachi has arrested 12 suspects in connection to the shooting.
