The new Bulgarian Ambassador to Macedonia Rakovski Lashev has presented his credentials to Macedonia President George Ivanov.

Macedonia and Bulgaria are good neighbors sharing the same values of peace, freedom, democracy and prosperity in the region and beyond,” declared the Macedonian President upon welcoming the new Bulgarian Ambassador.

He has pointed out Macedonia’s interest in expanding the economic cooperation, and in using Bulgaria’s support in its preparation to join NATO and the EU.

Ambassador Lashev in turn emphasized the fact that Bulgaria will continue backing the Euro-Atlantic integration of its neighbor.

He declared that the existing political dialogue between Bulgaria and Macedonia, which is based on the 1999 Declaration of the then prime ministers of the two countries, was a significant achievement.

Lashev expressed his conviction that the future signing of the Treaty for Friendship and Good-Neighborly Relations proposed by Bulgaria will give a boost to the bilateral relations.

The so called Friendship Treaty was leaked to the Macedonian press in the spring of 2010. It was proposed by Bulgaria back in 2008 but Macedonia still has not agreed to it; according to extremely critical articles in the Macedonian papers, it is aimed at establishing Bulgarian domination in Macedonia.

In his speech, the new Bulgarian Ambassador in Skopje underscored the fact that the ceremony for welcoming him in Macedonia coincides with the upcoming celebrations of the 107 year since the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising from 1903 in which the predominantly Bulgarian population in the regions of Thrace and Macedonia rebelled against the Ottoman Empire.

The uprising date is marked in both Bulgaria and Macedonia in order to honor the memory of the heroes from the liberation struggle.

Ambassador Lashev said that the best way to do that will be to hold join ceremonies or remembrance.
