Bulgaria's Pazardzhik District Declares Emergency over Floods

Society » ENVIRONMENT | July 26, 2010, Monday // 19:40

An emergency situation was declared in Pazardzhik district, central southern Bulgaria, after heavy rains caused extensive flooding in the area.

Houses in a number of towns and villages in the region have been flooded.

The main road between Pazardzhik and Plovdiv is closed because of encroaching water.

Earlier Monday afternoon authorities announced that a stretch on the Trakiya highway connecting Bulgaria's capital Sofia with second-biggest city Plovdiv has also been flooded and a reduced speed limit has been imposed.

A number of other roads in the Pazardzhik district are threatened by flood water.

Two of the local rivers have gone out of their beds.
