The forthcoming congress of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) will not include in its agenda the election of new leader.
The decision was made at the Saturday meeting of the party’s National Council.
The congress will be held on October 16. The agenda can, however, be changed then.
The now leader of BSP and Prime Minister during the previous cabinet term, Sergey Stanishev, said he is not at all nervous about possible election in October and would comply with any of the Congress’ decision.
Stanishev pointed out the current top priority of the Socialists was to stop the ruling, center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party from taking over the entire State and to prove BSP is still a sound alternative.
Calls for the leader’s resignation were made after the party’s defeat in last summer’s general elections. Some of the most vocal BSP members were, however, not present during the Saturday vote. The official reason, stated by fellow party members, was other urgent matters. Another one of Stanishev’s opponents – Tatyana Doncheva has left the Socialists’ ranks and formed a new political organization.
Despite the turmoil, Stanishev was able to survive and keep the post after the party’s Congress in the fall of 2009 and is almost certain to continue to lead the party after this fall as well.
