Bulgaria’s Agriculture Minister will be the person in charge of granting permits to shoot down killer bears and other wild animals, according to draft legislation.

The new provision is part of amendments of the Hunting and Wild Animals Protection Act tabled to Parliament by a group of MPs from the ruling center-right party GERB.

The permission to shoot down a certain animal such as a killer bear, or a certain number of animals from some species is presently granted by the Environment Ministers.

The proposed legislative amendments are justified with the rising number of attacks on humans by bears in the southern Rhodopi Mountain and the central part of the Stara Planina (i.e. Balkan) Mountain.

In the last two months one man was killed and one women was severely wounded in killer bear attacks.

According to the authors of the new legislation, transferring the responsibility for the hunting down of animals from the Environment Minister to the Agriculture Minister will make the process simpler and more efficient as the State Forestry Agency, which is technically in charge of issuing the permis after an approval by the respective minister, is part of the structure of the Agriculture Ministry.
