Bulgarian Customs agents from the Kulata cross point at the Greek border seized Saturday over 660 000 boxes of contraband cigarettes from two Greek drivers.

The drivers, who have been employed by Bulgarian companies, were arrested and the cigarettes confiscated.

The cigarettes have been hidden in the trucks’ trailers behind goods such as cotton yarn and peaches. The agents did not receive a signal and acted on their personal judgment and on the grounds of risk analysis and risk profile.

The value of the cigarettes is still being estimated, but the evaded taxes amount to BGN hundreds of thousands.

The contraband is record-high – the largest in the last several years.
