A new center-right government has assumed office in the Czech Republic after the country was ruled by a caretaker Cabinet for more than a year.

The center-right government is headed by the new Prime Minister Petr Necas, and is formed by a coalition of three parties - the conservative TOP09 party, the centrist Public Affairs party and the Civic Democrats. The coalition agreement was signed on Monday.

PM Necas, who is the leader of the Civic Democrats party has promised to reduce the country’s budget deficit from 5.9% of the GDP down to 3% by 2013 as required by the EU Stability and Growth Pact.

The new center-right coalition will have a majority of 118 MPs in the 200-seat Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament, the most comfortable majority since the Czech Republic became independent in 1993.

According to the constitution, the government must seek a vote of confidence within 30 days of being appointed.

“I believe that your government will be stable as it has excellent preconditions for that with the largest majority in parliament in the new history of Czech Republic,” Czech President Vaclav Klaus said during the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday.

The country has been governed by a caretaker government after Mirek Topolanek’s center-right government lost a vote of confidence in March 2009, in the middle of the Czech EU Presidency.
