Stolen paintings of a renowned Bulgarian artist have been located in art galleries in the UK capital London, announced the Culture Ministry.
A total of 28 paintings in question by Nikola Tanev (1890-1962) disappeared as his museum house in Sofia was robbed in 1999.
Experts from the Bulgarian National Arts Gallery have identified over past week one of the missing paintings using photos from a London gallery.
The news comes just as the Ministry of Culture and the National Gallery are preparing an exhibit dedicated to the 120th year since the birth of Nikola Tanev. The last full-fledged presentation of his works was in 1976.
Bulgaria's Culture Ministry states that it is going to undertake all necessary measures to recover any stolen paintings of Tanev under the Cultural Heritage Act. No information has been provided about which of the London galleries might be hosting the stolen Bulgarian paintings.
