Bulgaria will profit well from participating in Russian South Stream gas pipeline project, said Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov after meeting Russian deputy-PM Viktor Zubkov in Sofia.
Thus Borissov effectively dispelled speculation he himself provoked June that Bulgaria might back out of large-scale projects with Russia, including South Stream.
The profit for Bulgaria from participating in the project will double or triple, claimed Borisov.
The Bulgarian PM said that details on the infrastructure of the projected pipeline's stretch in Bulgaria are yet to be clarified. In particular it is to be determined in what ways existing infrastructure is going to be used and whether new pipes must be built.
According to Borisov, Bulgaria will retain 100% ownership of existing pipe infrastructure and will obtain 50% ownership of new pipes that have to be built.
Boyko Borisov was confident that those details are going to be fleshed out during this week's visit of a Bulgarian delegation to Moscow, coming on Thursday. The Bulgarian PM also reiterated Bulgaria's commitment to European gas pipeline project Nabucco, saying that it does not conflict with South Stream.
Borisov further dismissed any talk about a "war" between him and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as "fiction" spawned by media. He thanked the Russian party for its open and transparent stance in the talks.
What is more, Borisov expressed conviction that joint energy projects between Russia and Bulgaria are going to be beneficial for both countries, dispelling impressions he created himself earlier June and July that Bulgaria is turning its back on Russian energy interests.
This turn of events comes just less than a day after international press, including Russian editions, reprised the theme of Bulgaria steering away from Russia.
In particular, Borisov added that there are no unclarities left on the Belene NPP project either. He added that the execution of those projects would additionally open up new jobs in Bulgaria, which was a great opportunity during times of crisis.
Borisov reiterated that he and Zubkov had coordinated Road Maps for both South Stream and Belene.
