A 64-year-old Scottish woman has died in the Bulgarian coastal resort of Sveti Vlas after a concrete mixer topped over and hit a group of tourists walking on the pavement.

The woman died on the spot, while her husband, 56, was heavily injured and rushed to the local hospital. Doctors say his life is out of danger.

Police say the reason for the tragic incident is the high speed at which the truck was driving when it tried to take a turn only to end up on the sidewalk, sweeping away the tourists there.

Test results showed that the driver blood-alcohol level was below the legal limit. The truck is owned by the Burgas-based company Domostroene.

There are suspicions that the project the driver worked for is illegal since construction works in Bulgaria's Black Sea summer destinations were banned in the middle of May, when the new season set in.
