The President of Nigeria has suspended his country's national football team from participating in international competitions for two years.

“President Goodluck Jonathan ordered Nigeria to withdraw from all international competitions for two years, which will enable Nigeria to reorganize its football,” the President's spokesperson announced Tuesday, as cited by the BBC.

The President has decided to punish the team for their poor performance at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Nigerian team finished last in their Group B, gaining only one point from all three games.

Nigeria was beaten by Argentina 0:1, by Greece 1:2, and finished 2:2 with South Korea, which led to the President's punishment.

Under FIFA rules, however, government interference with the national team is strictly forbidden.
