Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov visits Wednesday the Palestinian Authority, after he had official talks in Israel Tuesday.
“Bulgaria's friendship with Israel does not come at the expense of others,” stressed Mladenov.
He discussed opportunities for EU participation on the Gaza borders and expressed his strong commitment to improving the situation of Gaza's population. The Bulgarian foreign minister said that the EU views the recent relaxing of the list of goods that cannot enter Gaza as an important and positive decision on the part of Israel for the time being.
On meeting Mladenov, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said that the macroeconomic results of the Bulgarian government in times of crisis are “impressive”. He called on Bulgaria to promote its tourist products in Israel, in the context of a drop down of Israeli tourist flow to Turkey. Netanyahu also promised to visit Bulgaria this year.
President Simon Peres and minister Mladenov stressed their common position that the start of direct negotiations is of utmost importance for the situation in the Middle East.
Monday the Bulgarian foreign minister was present at the ceremony for the official recognition of Bulgarian Vladimir Kurtev as “a Righteous Among Nations” by Israel’s Yad Vashem, the "Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority" for his role in the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews from deportation to Nazi death camps in 1943. Vladimir Kurtev is the seventh Bulgarian recognized as Righteous Among Nations.
