The former Bulgarian Social Minister Lidia Shuleva has said that increasing the childbirths is the solution for the country's demographic crisis.

“The biggest problem for the pension reform is the demographic crisis and the decreasing population. The aging, which has been underestimated for years, is on the agenda again,” Shuleva said in her interview for the Bulgarian private TV channel NovaTV.

In her words, in the long run, increasing the childbirths would be the solution for the problem, and in the short run, serious measures need to be taken up in the pension system because it will not be able to withstood the pressure.

“47% of the state budget goes for paying pensions and this is disturbing. Measures need to be taken up in order to achieve a balance,” she said.

According to Shuleva, the increasing of the retirement length of service is not as dramatic as the unemployment and the health status of the people are.

“The government should think about the fact that if it makes a pension reform and wants to give the people opportunity to work longer, then its main issue would be to sustain their good health condition so that they will be able to work,” Shuleva said.
