BDZ Gives Free Travel to Children on June 1st
On the occasion of the International Children's Day BDZ this year will continue to observe its good tradition and will give free travel to all Bulgarian children up to 14 years of age.
Bulgaria marks Monday the International Children's Day, established in 1925 during the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland.
June 1 was chosen as the International Children's Day because the Chinese Consul-General in San Francisco (US) gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year, and also coincided with the conference in Geneva.
The International Day for Children Protection was established on June 1, 1949 by a decision of the Council of the International Women's Democratic Federation during its Moscow session.
International Children's Day was first celebrated in 1950 in 51 countries worldwide.
On November 20, 1959 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. The Convention on the Rights of the Child was then signed on the same day in 1989, which has since been ratified by 191 states.
Children's Day is celebrated on 1 June each year. It is usually marked with speeches on children's rights and wellbeing, children TV programs, parties, various actions involving or dedicated to children, families going out etc.
Many events are organized in Bulgaria to mark the day: the Bulgarian State Railroads, BDZ, will offer free rides to children under 14 to all destinations in second class cars; the State Agency for Child Protection is organizing a student competition about knowledge of EU Member State to be held in a special tent near the metro station adjacent to the University of Sofia. At the same location, Education Minister, Sergey Ignatov will launch a 3-day information “marathon” titled: “What Social Europe Can Do for You?” Ignatov will later teach a lesson to students at the 2nd English Language School in Sofia.
Health Minister, Anna-Maria Borisova, will also speak to Sofia students.
In the evening, Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, will attend the 2nd the annual award ceremony “for Bulgaria’s Successful Children,” organized by the “Dimitar Berbatov” Foundation. The event will be held at the National “Ivan Vazov” Theater. Culture Minister. Vezhdi Rashidov, and Ignatov are also going to be present.
In Bulgaria, in addition to all events, drivers are invited to turn their lights on during the day.
