The basketball federations of ten Eastern European countries, including Bulgaria, have declared themselves against the current management of FIBA Europe.
Representatives of the basketball organizations of Armenia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Latvia, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, and Ukraine have met in Kiev, and have drafted a joint statement, which they signed about two weeks after elections at the European branch of the International Basketball Federation.
“We express our deep concern over the methods used by some of the senior administrative officials of FIBA Europe during the last elections for the management positions at the organization. As a result of these manipulations, a number of leading national basketball federations were left out of the Board of FIBA Europe, and will not be represented there in the next four years,” reads the statement published on the website of the Russian Basketball Federation.
It says that the policies of FIBA Europe are dangerous for European basketball and may lead to a division of the organization.
The ten Eastern European Federations have demanded a strict distinction between the political and executive authority within FIBA Europe. They have called upon the members of its Board to abstain from making administratively detrimental decisions.
“We will coordinate our actions in order to protect our interests as representatives of more than 300 million people,” reads the statement, which was signed by the Secretaries of the Bulgarian and Greek basketball federations, and by the presidents of the federations of the other eight countries.
The ten dissenters claim that their protest is constructive in character, and that they insist on transparency and competent governance.
