A plane of the low-cost company Wizz Air, which was to fly 136 passengers from the Spanish to the Bulgarian capital, has failed to take off twice.

"The plane was to depart from Madrid late on Saturday and touch down at Sofia airport about an hour after midnight," the executive director of the Bulgarian airport Plamen Stanchev told Darik radio.

The airline explained that the delay is due to a technical failure and rescheduled the landing for 2.30 on Sunday afternoon, but reports say the plane still has not taken off Madrid.

A local news agency cited a passenger as saying that a fire broke out aboard the Wizz Air plane, while leaving the runway.

All of the passengers have been evacuated and none of them has been injured, the report says.

It was not immediately clear how many of the passengers are Bulgarians.
