The Bulgarian Slance Stara Zagora Tabak cigarette producing company is to release a new brand of cigarettes curiously named "Don Corleone", it has been announced.
Bulgaria's police are reported to have launched Friday a new operation, codenamed 'The Tax Drainers' in which nearly 20 people have been arrested.
Bulgarian commandos have raided residential areas within the capital Sofia and its environs including “Lyulin,” “Bankya”, “Ovcha Kupel” and “Banishora”.
6-8 people of those detained are said to be involved in the gang, while the remaining 15 have been brought in for questioning.
The gang is accused of robbing the sate by stealing about BGN 40 M through tax draining, explained Friday morning in an interview for bTV Bulgaria's Interior Minister, Tsevtan Tsvetanov.
The Tax Drainers have used illiterate people from the Bulgarian Roma community and registered companies on their name. They have thus been able to issue fake invoices for non-existing goods or services to firms with legal businesses and charge a lower VAT.
The ringleader of the gang, nicknamed Don Corleone, is reported to be 65 years old, with a previous criminal record.
After searching his house, Bulgarian police have confiscated book keeping documentation that is directly linked to the group's criminal activity.
Two of the other gang members, nicknamed Viki the Little One and Fatboy, have been charged with tax fraud and illegal real estate and plot appropriation.
Bulgaria's Interior Minister Tsvetanov said Friday that both the Interior Ministry, Bulgaria's National State Security Agency, the National Revenue Agency and the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office have been investigating the cases for months.
