Bulgaria: Bulgarian Customs See Boost in VAT Revenues

Bulgaria’s Customs Agency has managed to raise 25% more revenues from value-added tax on import in April 2010 year-on-year.

According to preliminary data of the Agency, it has collected a total of BGN 257 M from VAT on imported goods in April 2010 compared to BGN 205.1 M in April of last year.

This makes April 2010 the month with the highest VAT income raised by the Customs since the economic crisis kicked off in November 2008.

In the first four months of 2010, the Customs Agency raised a total of BGN 792.7 M from VAT on import, which is a 7% increase compared to January-April 2009.

The Customs Agency points out that the only month in 2010 when there was a decline of the VAT income was February, largely because a key Bulgarian oil refinery terminated its regular production operations because of scheduled repairs.
