The US Ambassador to Sofia, James Warlick, voiced strong criticism of Bulgaria’s judicial system, saying a dark cloud is hanging over the magistrates.

Warlick, who spoke Friday during a meeting with Chief Prosecutor, Boris Velchev, pointed out the fact Bulgaria has corrupted judges must be admitted.

The Ambassador defined the cloud in question as the recent scandal with Krasimir Georgiev aka Krasio the Black.

30 high-ranking magistrates have been exposed so far for their ties with the notorious Krasio, who is facing charges of “trading” magistrate positions for cash. Only 2 have been dismissed by the Supreme Judicial Council’s (VSS) Anti-corruption Committee. The scandal also involved names of politicians, but until now, the focus remains only on magistrates.

Warlick addressed through Velchev Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, and Deputy PM and Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, appealing to them to find ways to deal with the problem seriously.

“The World is watching you,” the Ambassador reiterated several times, stressing the problem must be solved and must be solved now.

Warlick also told the opposition to stop just being a critic, but undertake responsibilities because Bulgaria is their country as well.

Reporters say the Ambassador arrived at the office of the Chief Prosecutor exactly at 10 am and spend about an hour before leaving with a stern look on his face.
