A number of senior Polish officials have died together with President Lech Kaczynski as the Polish government plane crashed in Russia on way to a Katyn Massacre remembrance.

The casualties include a number of officials from the Presidential Administration, as well as Polish Central Bank Governor S?awomir Skrzypek, WP gen. Franciszek G?gor – Head of the General Staff of the Polish Army, Polish Ombudsman Janusz Kochanowski.

The 132 people on board included a number of relatives and descendants of the Polish military officers who were slaughtered in the Katyn Massacre 70 years ago.

The recognition on part of the current Russian leadership of the Katyn Massacre had contributed to the improvement of the relations between Russia and Poland. International commentators have pointed out that the Russian authorities have come under a lot of pressure to investigate the causes of the tragic accident near Smolensk.
