Bulgarian Builders Rally over Unpaid Wages from US Training Ground: Bulgarian Builders Disgruntled with US Training Ground Bulgarian construction businesses claim the facility at the US military training ground in Novo Selo is illegal because it lacks a building permit. Photo by BGNES

Representatives of 21 Bulgarian construction companies staged a protest rally at the US military training ground in Novo Selo over unpaid work wages.

About 150 people arrived with cars and construction equipment at the nearby major southern Bulgarian road junction known as “Petolachkata.”

The companies are still waiting to be paid BGN 3.8 M for construction works they have completed as building contractors. The 21 businesses from southeastern Bulgaria are joined by a company from the Black Sea city of Burgas, which is owed BGN 6 M by the German building giant “Bilfinger Berger.”

The demonstrators insist the Novo Selo facility is illegal because it does not have a building permit and construction control, and demand its freezing until all necessary paperwork is issued.

The participants arrived at “Petolachkata” holding signs reading: “We Want Justice!,” “Who Allowed Bilfinger Berger to be above the Law?,” “How Long Are Bulgarian Builders Going to Finance Bilfinger Berger and the American Army?”

The disregard on the part of the US and German partners about the problem is humiliating, the demonstrators say. They demand that the US Corps of Engineers, which finances the training ground, executes the necessary control over the carrying out of the contract.

The builders threaten to block traffic at “Petolachkata” completely on April 14 if they fail to receive an answer from the Bulgarian Defense and Regional Ministries.
