Former Interior Minister Rumen Petkov has slammed the current center-right GERB government over unemployment and excise duty increases.
Bulgarian Socilaist Party MP Petkov said Tuesday that there has been a 15% fall in excises since the increase of excise duty on cigarettes. He added that the cigarette markets in Pleven and Nikopol in North Bulgaria are rife with contraband stock.
"They probably come from organized smuggling and I am not far from thinking that the illegal channels are organized and managed by the state. The same state that expected increased revenues from this type of charge (excise duty) in the treasury," Petkov stated.
Regarding unemployment Petkov said that the jobless rate had reached 50% in some regions of Bulgaria, with citizens not even being able to afford a bus ticket to reach the job centers, thus being left off official statistics.
Petkov concluded that "there has not been such a severe failure in the Interior Ministry in recent years”. He said that the recent “PR raids” such as on the Octopus gang had busted 42 people with 36 of them later being released.
Petkov also defended his record as Interior Minister using the example of the raid on Dimitar Zhelyazkov, aka Mityo Ochite’s crime organization which busted 17 criminals who all received jail sentences. He also stated that the current government has not put any focus on "everyday crime" that is "increasingly affecting normal people in Bulgaria".
