The Greek government is ready to access “Republic Northern Macedonia” in its ongoing name dispute with Macedonia.

“The name “Republic Northern Macedonia is acceptable for the Greek side. This idea was proposed to the international envoy Matthew Nimitz by us,” said Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Drutsas on Sky TV.

According to Drutsas, bilateral meetings such as the one between the Prime Ministers of the two states – George Papandreau and Nikola Gruevski – can contribute significantly to the resolving of the name dispute.

The Deputy Foreign Minister has said that Greece supported Macedonia for NATO and the EU on the condition that the name dispute got resolved.

Greece is concerned over the name of the Republic of Macedonia because its northern regions also bear the geographic name of Macedonia.
