PM Boyko Borisov has stated that Bulgaria has already entered the “Greek version” of the financial crisis as the treasury is empty because of a huge hidden deficit.
The damage has mainly been done by the wasted money on projects such as the Belene Nuclear Power Plant and Tsankov Kamak. Illegal contracts of over BGN 2,12 B are the other main reason for the gaping financial hole in the budget, “These are total violations”, Borisov stated in an interview for the Standart daily newspaper Sunday.
He explained that Budget Law prohibits the signing of contracts for any activities without money being set-aside for them in the Treasury. “Many of these agreements were made by the previous government with initial funding and then were extended by annexes, with no money to cover them,” he continued.
Borisov threatened that all the documentation his government has uncovered will be given to the Prosecutor’s Office. “Given the budget shortfall, people need to know who is guilty” he added.
