Bulgaria's Deputy Foreign Minister, Valeri Mitrev, says that the BGN 1,2 B for the country's health care will be enough to significantly up salaries in the sector.
Mitrev informed that according to preliminary calculations doctors will have a starting salary of EUR 1 100 and nurses of EUR 400, under the condition medical facilities are restructured and public tenders are carried out without violations.
The new salaries will not be based on the number of examined patients, but will be rather paid through delegated budgets.
A probe of the Health Ministry had found that many hospitals purchase medications at prices higher than those in pharmacies while Bulgarians pay about BGN 400 M a year under the table for medical services. The Ministry and the Health Care Parliamentary Committee are trying to align services at all hospitals in order to eliminate corruption.
Medical standards are expected to be ready by the end of May.
