Bulgaria Energy Minister, Traicho Traikov, has announced that around EUR 600 M has been spent so far on the site of the Belene Nuclear Power Plant.

Traikov said Tuesday that “the money has been accounted for, but nothing has been done. He added that these funds are now irretrievably lost and thus can not be used for what was planned.

Traikov and Bulgaria PM Borisov will visit the site on which the Belene NPP is set to be constructed later Tuesday.

In February Russian Energy Minister, Sergei Shmatko, revealed that Russia and Bulgaria had agreed to start the construction of Belene NPP in Spring 2010 after Russia accepted a Bulgarian request for a EUR 2 B loan from Rosatom for the construction of the Plant.

However, the Bulgarian center-right GERB government has since said that the project will not be realized unless an EU strategic investor is found to fund it.
