The Management of the Sofia Airport Center, a project of Tishman International and GE Real Estate, has presented the first building in Bulgaria to be LEED certificed.

A presentation by Tishman International highlighted the new building development at Sofia Airport Center, the international business park now under development in the Bulgarian capital.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized certification scheme of "green" buildings.

Carlo Marzot, Tishman’s design engineering representative and managing director of EZ MEP International, presented the first LEED certified building in Sofia Airport Center - and the first awarded building in Bulgaria - outlining the definitions of sustainable construction and energy efficiency and the benefits of both programs in shopping areas.

"Our team is proud of the appointment of an expert of the rank of Mr Marzot" said Alan D. Levy, Chairman of Tishman International.

"Tishman is a proven leader in both directions: sustainable construction and energy efficiency,” he added.

The use of ecological materials in the construction of the latest Class A office building, and the design features ensuring a healthier, safe and efficient working environment for tenants, put the site in the rankings for the sustainable development LEED award.

"The assessment is not only about lower operating costs and higher value of the asset, but also about lowering the amount of waste transported to landfills, the reduced use of electricity and water, and smaller emissions of greenhouse gases," Levy explained.

"In the international business park, energy consumption will fall dramatically, as foreseen in the project, with the introduction of renewable energy sources, and with natural daylight penetrating the open atriums and double glazed windows," he added.

Console shutters and a double-glazed solar glass façade aim to reduce effects of heat and sun. The complex has an energy-efficient system for building management (BMS), which monitors the outside temperature and regulates the air conditioning system.

Tishman International is currently active in the US, UK and European countries including Bulgaria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania.

Since the European operation was formed in 1986, Tishman has developed and constructed millions of square meters of premier office and commercial space.

The company boasts a prestigious international list of clients, including New York Life, Bank of America, Citibank, American Express, HVB real Estate and many more.
