The Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party, which is part of the rightist Blue Coalition, demands a no-confidence vote for President, Georgi Parvanov, over the “transcript” scandal.
The rightists are appealing to the Members of the Parliament to clearly state their position regarding the unprecedented publishing of the transcript from a Friday meeting between Parvanov and Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov. They are further requesting from Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, to initiate an impeachment procedure. DSB have already collected 60 signatures and insist the President has violated the Constitution.
In addition, the right-wing, including their coalition partner Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) demands the transcripts from all meetings of the President to be made available to the public. UDF particularly insists on the transcript from the meeting between Parvanov and the Head of the Russian Gazprom, Alexey Miller. The party MPs will propose amendments of the State Protocol Act in order to set strict rules for all institutions regarding the publishing of transcripts from meetings, since until now such rules exist only for talks with foreign delegations.
Meanwhile, Evgeni Chachev, former Environmental Minister from the cabinet of ex-PM and DSB leader, Ivan Kostov, saids for Darik radio that impeachment could happen because in addition to the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party, the far-right, nationalist Ataka party, and the Blue Coalition, which all together have 152 votes, independent MPs will also vote yes on the impeachment proposal, bringing the total votes to the required 160.
The conflict between Djankov and Parvanov flared up after the appearance of the Finance Minister in the talk show of the TV channel Nova Televizia Monday night, where he was asked to confirm claims that the President is a “young billionaire” and has “dozens of luxury properties in the United States, Europe and Dubai.” Djankov immediately denied saying such things, but when the host reiterated the question: “Is the President a young billionaire?” the Minister replied: “He is definitely not young.” The very next day, Parvanov made an official call for Djankov’s resignation. In an instant reply, the Minister denied any wrongdoing, but nevertheless and on the insistence of PM Borisov, who arranged a meeting between him and the President, agreed to try to iron out the “misunderstanding.” On Friday, following the talks between the two, Parvanov published the transcript on his website triggering a wave of comments and criticism.
