European Parliament President, Jerzy Buzek, has said that Turkey is finding it difficult to meet the Copenhagen criteria which would allow it to join the EU.

“In Bulgaria you know very well how difficult it is to meet the Copenhagen criteria. It is difficult for Turkey to fulfill them, it waits, the European Union also awaits the resolution of some problems. To say, at least they have to resolve the Cyprus issue. It is very difficult to say when we will complete our negotiations with Turkey,” Buzek told Darik Radio on Thursday.

Regarding the Ukraine’s possible EU entry Buzek continued; “of course, it is a European country, but today it is not at all ready to be a member of the European Union. Many reforms should be carried out before any discussions are held regarding future membership of the Ukraine in the European Union.”

On another subject Buzek concluded that the EUR 3000 fine given to UK Eurosceptic MEP Nigel Farage on Tuesday was the "most severe punishment" possible. Farage was reprimanded for "insulting" behaviour after telling President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy he had "the charisma of a damp rag".
