Activists from the nationalist Bulgarian National Union ‘Guards’ staged a provocative march through the town of Kardzhali on Wednesday – National Liberation Day.

Two bus loads of the ‘Guards’ from around Bulgaria arrived in the Southern town of Kardzhali and proceeded to march from the bus station to the Monument of the Liberators in the town center, according to reports.

The group of young Guards, dressed in black and wearing balck sunglasses waved Bulgarian flags and shouted slogans such as “Bulgaria-for Bulgarians”, “For Bulgaria – Freedom or Death” and “All Communists – in Court”. They also called on Bulgarians to “wake-up” – “"Balgariyo, wake up!".

The ‘Guards’ later said they had chosen Kardzhali as it was ruled by the “unconstitutional” ethnic Turkish party Movement for rights and Freedoms (DPS), “whose representatives were from a foreign power and a foreign country.”

Earlier in Kardzhali for a second year in a row the Mayor, the Orthodox priest, and the mufti in Bulgaria’s Kardzhali marked together the National Liberation Day, March 3.

Kardzhali is according to the last census in 2001 the region of Bulgaria with the highest relative proportion of ethnic Turks.
