Turkey's ambassador to Sofia has expressed satisfaction with Bulgaria's support for the country's full membership in the European Union, which he has described as a logical historical development.
Ambassador Mehmed Gyuchyuk spoke at an event, organized by Cafe Babel Sofia and also attended by former European Affairs Minister Gergana Passy in her capacity of chairman of the movement Pan Europa Bulgaria, pollster Antoniy Galabov and MEP Andrey Kovachev.
“Turkey belongs to Europe and has been part of Europe for centuries,” the ambassador stated, adding that the country is a member of the Council of Europe, NATO and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
“The accession to the European Union is a public project in Turkey, this is not a political or economic issue. The Turkish society and the people of Europe will have the final say in deciding whether Turkey should be part of the European Union when the time for this comes,” the ambassador pointed out.
According to Gergana Passy Turkey's future membership in the European Union will be the culmination in the country's modernization.
“The European prospect is a strong driver, which motivates Turkey to keep on with its reforms,” Passy said, adding however that the support for EU membership among the young people in Turkey is declining.
All participants in the debate agreed that Bulgaria should consult and help Ankara with its European affairs agenda.
