The situation in Northwestern Bulgaria is about to become critical as the rising levels of the Danube and Timok Rivers threaten to flood the area.

The northwestern Bulgarian municipality of Bregovo located along the border with Serbia has declared an emergency situation because of the rising level of the Timok River.

The Municipality has asked the local people to volunteer for the immediate further construction of the main dike in order to save the town. Some 5 000 decares of agricultural land and 15 houses have already been flooded. Residents of the suburbs of the town have started to evacuate.

At the same time, the level of the Danube River continues to rise threatening to flood much larger areas in Northwestern and Northern Bulgaria.

The level of the Danube River at the city of Vidin is expected to reach 8 m within hours.

The town of Lom further down the river is in a critical condition as the level there is 783 cm, with only 40 cm left before the Danube floods most of it.

The Lom Mayor has ordered the construction of a second line of dikes in order to try to save the central part of the town from flooding.
