The Great EU Budget Heist: 5 Billion Euros Gone in 2022!
In 2022, the European Public Prosecutor's Office revealed a substantial 5 billion euro damage to the EU budget due to the misuse of EU funds
The European Commission anti-fraud office, OLAF, has reported on misappropriation of operational program funding, according to Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.
Speaking after the regular Wednesday cabinet meeting, Tsvetanov said that major findings had been revealed by OLAF concerning conflict of interest on the part of some staff working either in state administrative units or in some political headquarters, that had direct involvement with NGOs participating in the development of projects.
"Where there are breaches, these people will be held responsible," the Minister said, while emphasizing the established coordination and cooperation between OLAF, the Interior Ministry and the Prosecution office.
"Most importantly, we have regained the confidence of OLAF as a reliable partner, and are able to prevent financial abuse of European funds," he added.
Tsvetanov also divulged that discussion was ongoing as to whether there was a legal basis for transferring the legal proceedings against Mario Nikolov to Germany.
Nikolov is accused of draining EUR 7,5 M from the EU SAPARD agriculture development program, in a trial that has been repeatedly postponed. The German contact associated with Nikolov in the scheme has already been tried and sentenced in that country.
